New Jersey Receives $2.3 Million for Pediatric Mental Health Services

This past week it was announced that the federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), along with the Nicholson Foundation, awarded the New Jersey State Department of Health $2.3 million to expand access to their Pediatric Psychiatry Collective (PPC) using telehealth. They have dubbed this effort the “New Jersey Family-Centered Mental Health Access Program.”

The PPC is a network of nine hospital-based “hubs” across the state where primary care providers can refer their pediatric and adolescent patients for mental and behavioral health services. The addition of telehealth services will drastically increase access to those services that are so desperately needed, but can be hard to come by.

The press release issued by the New Jersey DOH on January 10th cited a staggering statistic: “Nearly 20 percent of U.S. children have a mental, emotional or behavioral disorder.” At a time when we are all acutely aware of the life-threatening issues that can arise out of such disorders, such as substance abuse and obesity, early and timely diagnosis and treatment is one meaningful way we can ensure our children’s futures.
